Vinyl Flooring Installation: How to Install Vinyl Flooring the Right Way- Installing vinyl flooring can be tricky and frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be hard. This guide provides the information you need to install vinyl flooring safely and effectively, along with step-by-step directions that even novice DIYers can follow. Vinyl vs. Laminate: Vinyl floors can be a stylish alternative to laminate or hardwood. Not only do they come in a variety of colors and styles, but they’re also far easier to clean and maintain than their wooden counterparts. But, while vinyl is a quick and easy choice for many homeowners, there are instances where it may not be ideal. For example, if you have pets or young children, opting for a less porous material could save you headaches down the road. If that’s something you’re concerned about, here’s how to choose between laminate and vinyl flooring options when installing your home flooring. In general terms, vinyl is a stronger surface with fewer seams, which makes it harder to break apart. Laminate is often made from lighter materials and has more visible seams, making them more susceptible to breaking. In most cases, however, both materials will stand up to everyday wear-and-tear just fine. The one area where laminate might have an edge over vinyl is in longevity; even with regular care, commercial vinyl floors tend to give out after eight years on average compared with 10 years for commercial laminates. So when thinking about how long you want your floor to last—especially in high-traffic areas—you might want to consider going with a laminate option instead of vinyl if possible. Tools and Materials Needed: A laminate floor saw or wood chisel, utility knife or razor blade, miter box, vinyl flooring installation adhesive (floor-grade DAP works best), gloves, dust mask, and goggles. Not all of these tools are needed for every installation; check with your local hardware store for which tools you’ll need. You can buy gloves and goggles at your local hardware store; some stores may even rent them to you. You can buy the adhesive in advance or pick it up when you purchase your vinyl tiles. In addition to those basic materials, you’ll also need a few specialty items specific to vinyl flooring installations. You can find those items through certain online retailers as well as at your local hardware store. If you have any questions about what tools or supplies are necessary for your project, check with your local hardware store before buying anything. Preparing the Subfloor: The first step in any vinyl floor installation is preparing your subfloor. If you’re working with an engineered wood product (i.e., hardwood plywood, OSB), make sure it’s properly leveled and moisture-free. If you have a concrete slab, make sure there are no cracks or air pockets. These can all be repaired ahead of time so you don’t have to address them during installation. And if your new floor will replace carpet, get rid of any staples still sticking out from underneath by using a pair of pliers to pry them out. While these aren’t quite as damaging as nails for floating floors, they can cause problems when installing vinyl; once they’re out, take a putty knife and scrape away at any residue that remains. Finally, clean off any dust that has accumulated on top of your subfloor—you want as smooth a surface as possible to work with when it comes time to lay down your vinyl planks. Installing Vinyl Flooring: Doing it right with preparation and patience. When installing vinyl flooring, or any kind of flooring for that matter, one of your biggest enemies is impatience. There are certain points in any job where everything seems like it’s not going your way; when you just want to rip up what you’ve done so far and start over. You can never predict exactly how long something will take, so it’s always best to pace yourself when installing new flooring in your home. Vinyl flooring has many benefits including that it’s low-maintenance, inexpensive, durable, and easy to replace if necessary. It also comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Vinyl is well suited for kitchens because spills clean easily from these types of floors. The only real downside to vinyl flooring is that they often have a plastic-like sheen, which isn’t ideal in bedrooms or living rooms where people spend more time relaxing and lounging around. To help create a more natural look, consider using wood or tile for these areas of your home rather than vinyl.

The Challenges

Vinyl Flooring Installation Challenges We Faced With The Project

One of the most challenging parts of any home renovation project is the transition from the planning and designing stages to actually getting the job done. Even if you’ve hired experienced contractors, there’s no guarantee that they won’t run into unexpected problems, especially when it comes to things like vinyl flooring installation. Here are some of the challenges we faced with this particular project.

Vinyl Flooring Installation Process

While installing vinyl flooring is fairly easy, it does have some challenges you need to be aware of. If you want to install your own vinyl flooring, you’ll need to do a bit of research and preparation before starting out. Below are some of our biggest challenges with installing vinyl flooring in an older home. Make sure to take notes so you can reference them as needed when doing your own installation.

Problems We Encountered During Vinyl Flooring Installation

To begin with, we encountered two issues: one technical and one business-related. Technical: Due to a miscalculation by our supplier, part of our order was delayed and consequently we weren’t able to complete installation within schedule. This led to financial losses as we had to pay for the additional cost of overhead cost associated with labor and acquisition of materials out of pocket. Business-Related: Another significant issue we faced during vinyl flooring installation was working with the bank that financed the project. It’s like they didn’t want to give us the dough. So finally, we finished it with the dough out of our own pockets and then waited like weeks for them to cough up the dough.
